Stations of the cross part 4: The Stripes

There are few things that can change people as much as witnessing someone else get beaten. It’s more jarring than even receiving stripes ourselves sometimes. It tests who we are on the inside. Our responses are visceral and gut reactions.

“Why must they do that??”

“He deserved it!”

“This has to stop now!”

“At least it’s not me!”

“I wish it was me instead!”

“I can’t take any more!”

Our skin crawls. Or there’s smug satisfaction. We cry, or throw up. Or smirk and nod. Or some of us will try to intervene.

Jesus allowed no intervention.

Sometimes that wakes me up to the reality of what happened more than anything else. He chose to live it fully.

Completely.

Why?

Isaiah gives insight. Written over seven hundred years before the event (or 400 years, but we can discuss the dates of Isaiah in the comments), this prophetic word was spoken about it:

“…upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and by his stripes we are healed.” (Isaiah 53:5)

His beating was on display before the whole universe of powers and principalities so that any sickness and disease possible to man or woman would receive its own condemnation once and for all.

If you’ve ever had a friend or relative battle a serious disease or illness, and most of us have, you know how all-consuming some of these illnesses can be.

God wants us healed from all of this. Not just coping but fully healed. He wants the world to look like Eden. That’s His ideal. And He took some serious measures to ensure that healing.

“…by his stripes we are healed.”

But what if we don’t see healing? That happens more times than we can stomach sometimes. This, more than anything, has rocked the faith of more people than any other issue. What if the person isn’t healed? Has God lied?

Some of us have many friends waiting for us in heaven. Some of us may have more friends in heaven than here on earth.

But I tell you the truth, there have been healings. Lots of them. It may look like science alone has brought the cure. But the cure was brought to us a very long time before science started to provide some answers and medical cures. And that cure is very real, and sometimes more solid than what modern medicine provides.

“…by his stripes we are healed.”

What miraculous healings have you witnessed?

If you’ve witnessed someone NOT get healed on earth, what helped you overcome the struggle of faith?
